At one point in the not so distant past, Amazon’s original low cost Kindle Fire tablet was the leading Android tablet, despite lacking the official Android app store and other stock applications, that was until the Google Nexus 7 first came around. According to the latest spat of rumours, Amazon is gearing up to take on the new Nexus 7 with a set of supercharged Kindle Fire tablets that are set to launch later this year.
According to BGR, who have sources close to the matter, Amazon is preparing some pretty strong specced Kindle Fire tablets that are set to launch later this year. The Kindle Fires will apparently sport the super speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors that will be clocked at around 2GHz for each core, in addition to the processors, they will also sport 2GB of RAM. The move will apparently be part of Amazon’s attack on Google’s new Nexus 7, which’s predecessor is the best selling Android tablet. Earlier rumours have also pointed towards the Kindle Fire HD getting a resolution bump of 1,900×1,200 on the 7-inch model with the Kindle Fire 8.9 getting a resolution bump to 2,560×1,600 to give both the Google Nexus 10 and Apple iPad 5 a go.
Although we certainly won’t be complaining if Amazon includes Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors in their upcoming products, we do worry about what steps will be done to keep the costs down, which Amazon has done in the past. Kindle Fire refresh? Hell yes.
Amazon created the sub-$200 tablet market when it introduced its Kindle Fire tablet in 2011 for $199, selling the hardware at a break even point and making no profit or loss. Now, almost two years later, they are rumoured to be ready to shaking up the sub-$100 tablet market as it prepares a low budget 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet.
