Rumours will be rumours, and the latest brings a juicy bit of information. Microsoft is supposedly preparing a 7.5-inch Surface tablet that will be produced in the masses to take on the likes of Apple’s iPad Mini and Asus’ Google Nexus 7 which have both proven to be quite successful ‘small’ tablets.

NPD DisplaySearch has told CNET that the Redmond giant is preparing a 7.5-inch version of its underwhelming Surface tablet when it hopes the impending Windows Blue update will give Windows based tablets a fighting chance again. Apparently it will take a while to source parts and start mass production, so long that Microsoft may only bring the tablet to the market in early 2014 instead of later this year as previous rumours have reported. The device is set to feature a strange 1,400×1,050 pixel resolution with a pixel density of 233 ppi. The price may be its downfall however as rumours indicate that it may cost $399, a significant leap from that of competitors.
Like with all rumours, this one should be taken with a pinch of salt, but considering all the different publications with ‘sources’ lending credibility to the statement, this one may prove correct. Do you think a smaller Surface would be able to compete?
