Despite a violent takeover saga unfolding over the company, Dell has pushed out a new variant of its Alienware X51 gaming personal computer, one running Linux instead of Microsoft’s Windows.

The Alienware X51 has been around for a while now as a midrange gaming rig with specifications to support the notion, but until now the PC only came out with Windows preloaded onto it. Dell added the Ubuntu touting version today with support for Steam for Linux which will offer up quite a few games for supporters of the open source platform. Steam for Linux was only launched in February and is yet to gain traction, but it is good to see a large PC manufacturer support Linux gaming.
The rig sports a Intel Core i3-3220 processor, 6GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce GTX 645 graphics and runs on Ubuntu 12.04. Prices start at $599 and rise as the extras and specifications do. Will you be buying one?
